SALISBURY, NC (February 26, 2010) – The Kutztown University softball team continued its winning ways by defeating host Catawba, 6-3, and Davis & Elkins, 9-1, in a pair of games at the Catawba tournament Friday afternoon. The 14th-ranked Golden Bears got contributions from their entire lineup.
In the opener, the Golden Bears (5-2 overall) took control with a four-run second inning and the pitching of Katlin Arbogast, who struck out six batters. Katie Lynch smacked the ball all over the field and finished 4-for-4. She scored two runs and drove in three runs for Kutztown. Michelle McGinty, Nicole Henninger and Maria Schiavo all had doubles for the Golden Bears.
Lynch singled in the first inning, ripped a two-run double down the rightfield line in the second inning, had a RBI single to centerfield in the third inning and doubled to leftfield in the sixth inning. Schiavo got the Golden Bears on the board first in the second inning when she had a RBI double.
The four run cushion was more than enough for Arbogast.
In the second game against Davis & Elkins, the Golden Bears had five extra bits to support winning pitcher Mary Hoch, who allowed one run in five innings. Kutztown scored in three of the five innings. Henninger capped off a big day by bludgeoning a ball and sending a monster shot over the fence for a two out three-run first inning home run.
McGinty, Schiavo and Nicole Hannum all contributed doubles for the Golden Bears. Sarah Couch tripled during the victory over D&E. Maria Isgro was all over the field, scoring a pair of runs and adding a sacrifice fly. Nicole Colineri was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in. Schiavo also had two hits for Kutztown.
The Golden Bears continue play in the Catawba tournament when they meet Fairmont State at 10 a.m. and Lenoir-Rhyne at 2 p.m.
