KUTZTOWN, PA (February 17, 2010) – The Kutztown University baseball team will take the field for the first time this season at a place they have become quite familiar with over the past few years, the Builder Invitational hosted by the Apprentice School.
The Golden Bears have dominated the tournament, winning in eight of the last 12 years. In 2009, KU breezed through the tournament by outscoring its opponents 68-29 over a five game span.
The tournament includes fellow Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) schools Bloomsburg University and Lock Haven University, as well as Briarcliffe College (N.Y.).
The Golden Bears will start off the round-robin portion with Lock Haven on Thursday at 6 p.m. and the Apprentice School on Friday at noon. KU will take on Briarcliffe (9 a.m.) and Bloomsburg (6 p.m.) on Saturday. A seeding will take place on Sunday with the championship game set for 3 p.m.
“Our objective is to win this tournament,” said head coach Chris Blum. “With five games scheduled, all of our pitchers will need to be ready to go.”
Typically the tournament is the second round of games at the start of the season. However, snowy conditions canceled the usual opening weekend doubleheaders at Barton College.
“I think things will be a little different without the Barton games beforehand,” said Blum. “We may be a bit rusty, but it's a tourney atmosphere which I enjoy.”
Following the Builder Invitational, the Golden Bears will venture on their spring break trip starting at Saturday March 6 and ending Wednesday March 10.
