KU defeats PSU-Berks behind Gray and Brennan's double-double's

READING, PA (November 20, 2010) – The Kutztown University men's basketball team defeated Penn State-Berks 90-49 in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon at Beaver Community Center. (BOXSCORE)

The Golden Bears (2-1 overall) saw contributions from numerous players as they had nine players scoring, four of which in double figures. Leading KU was Julius Gray (Lincoln University, PA/Oxford Area) who is having a terrific start to his senior season. After scoring a career-high 25 points against Wilmington University Thursday night, Gray scored 17 Saturday along with having a career-high 10 assists against the Nittany Lions. He went 3-for-6 from 3-point range and also set a career-high in free throws made (6).

“Julius is playing real well for us right now,” said Kutztown head men's basketball coach Bernie Driscoll. “You hate to take the ball out of his hands, but he is making some great passes and getting other players involved. He is being a great teammate and is making a strong case for himself at point guard early in the season.”

Kutztown led from start to finish and shot a season-high 56.4 percent from the field. KU was able to finish strongly as it went into half off an 11-4 run, and topped at a 30-8 run in the final 10 minutes of play.

The tandem of Eric Brennan (Chester, PA/West Catholic) and Tamir Johnson (Philadelphia, PA/Imhotep Charter) have continued to make their presence known on the boards this season, as they combined for 20 total rebounds on Saturday. That's just the nature of the beast. Brennan finished with 15 points off 6-for-10 shooting from the field, and grabbed 11 rebounds to give him his first double-double as a Golden Bear. Johnson went 4-for-5 from the field for 13 points, and added nine rebounds and three blocks.

Jermaine Jackson (Blandon, PA/Reading) made all four of his shots and finished with 11 points and six rebounds. J.J. Rowland (West Chester, PA/Henderson) had nine points, Jon DeShields (Chester, PA/Life Center) had eight points, and senior guard Steve Coffey (Reading, PA/Wilson) had seven points, four assists, and went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.

The Nittany Lions were led by guard Tore Turner with 12 points. Thomas Smith had nine points, and Devin Moore was PSU-Berks' leading rebounder with seven.

Kutztown will play in its home opener Tuesday November 23rd as it hosts Goldey-Beacom College at 8:00 p.m.

“This was a great win for the team,” said Driscoll.  “We needed to play well and remain confident as we have some tough competition coming up. Tuesday night should be a fun night for our guys and we look forward to getting back on our home court.”
