MANSFIELD, PA (October 23, 2010)—The Kutztown University women's field hockey team extended its winning streak to three by defeating Mansfield University, 3-1 in a non-conference contest at Karl Van Norman Field Saturday afternoon. (BOXSCORE)
The Golden Bears (8-4 overall) are ranked fourth in the South Region of the latest NCAA Division II field hockey poll, and fifth in this week's National Field Hockey Coaches' Association (NFCHA) Division II poll.
Immediately after intermission, freshman Samantha Carberry's first goal off a penalty stroke gave the Golden Bears the 2-1 advantage it would not relinquish.
Lately, Kutztown has been doubling the fun. KU has two losses in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). The Golden Bears are currently 2-0 on a three-game road trip, defeating Millersville earlier this week. This is their second consecutive game overcoming a 1-0 deficit. Freshman Jamie Koenig's two goals helped lead KU to victory. As luck would have it, Koenig's jersey number is two.
Koenig's performance this year resembles one who has been playing the game for ages. She hasn't let her inexperience on the collegiate level take away from her ability on the field, making her one of Kutztown's top leading scorers with six goals. Senior Abbey Sheeler and sophomore Jenna Gregory are both tied with seven goals. Koenig's first goal in the 18th minute was a two minute response to Mansfield's Kristy Tutorow's goal. The game was tied 1-1 at halftime.
Carberry's goal was the icing on the cake, but KU knew that it would have to continue to battle. Koenig struck again later in the second half, sealing the game at 3-1.
Junior goalie Emily Falko had seven saves against Mansfield's offense. The Golden Bears defense allowed only eight shots on goal.
The perfect ending to KU's three-game road trip would be defeating Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Miller Stadium.
