Healey keeps the name alive at KU

KUTZTOWN, PA - In the past, when in doubt of who had the ball for the Kutztown University field hockey team it was a good guess to say “one of the Healey's”. There was roughly a one-in-six chance that the guess was correct.

Nowadays, the percentage is much lower with only one Healey on the 2009 roster.

Carrie Healey (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) (Toms River/Toms River North) is that last remaining after her older sister Kelley graduated and twin sister Jacqueline whose major as a Med Tech forced her off campus.

“Not playing with Kelley was something that I realized right after the last game of the 2008 season,” says Carrie. “But the news about Jacque leaving came in February and it caught me a little off guard. Jacque had to make up her mind about what she wanted to do with her major. When she got into the University Hospital of Philadelphia it was made clear that she would be leaving KU.”

Although she misses both sisters equally, Carrie had a special bond with twin sister Jacque, her roommate at school the past two years. It's Kelley and Jacque who room together now in Philadelphia, with Kelley receiving a fellowship at Drexel.

“Jacque and I complemented each other perfectly” says the senior forward. “She was calm and smart, while I was a little more hyper. So she kept me in line and made sure things were kept under control.”

“Oh, so there still is a Healey on the team,” is what the opposing coach offered Healey during introductions against Bloomsburg.

Carrie and her Golden Bear family will look to continue their hot start to the 2009 season this weekend when it travels to East Stroudsburg for a 1 p.m. match on Saturday. At 2-0 in the Eastern Division East Stroudsburg is just ahead of KU in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference standings.

Coach Betty Wesner has had the privilege of coaching a Healey spanning from 2001-09. Colleen Healey started the run and actually coached Carrie and Kelley in 2006. The following year was the start of Carrie, Kelley and Jacque playing together.

“I have been blessed,” shares coach Wesner about her run with the Healey family. “Not only have they been great athletes, but excellent students as well. Along with all of those things, she is just fun to be around. Their parents have been wonderful supporters of our program and they appreciate all the work that goes in to running a successful program!”

“I didn't want to be the person that followed her sister to college,” explains Healey. “I was looking at other schools, but realized that KU was the best fit and I am very glad to have made that choice.”

After the historic 2-1 win against Bloomsburg on Monday, Carrie wasted no time updating her family on the recent accomplishment. “It was the first game that my parents missed,” explained Carrie “so right after the game I called my mom and then Kelley. [Kelley] was happy for me and the team, but wondered why we couldn't win that game when she was here.”

The 2009 season marks the first time in Healey's life that she was not playing field hockey alongside any of her sisters.

On the lacrosse field though, Healey is used to not having her sisters by her side, despite her best efforts.

“I tried to get them to come out for the team, Kelley was amazing and unstoppable in high school,” she said. “Unfortunately because of their class schedules they couldn't make it work out.”

Lauren Solley (Oley, PA/Olley Valley) (Oley/Oley Valley) and Anne Waapu (Hastings, NEW ZEALAND/) (Hastings, NEW ZEALAND) have forged a sister-like bond with Healey as they entered their fourth year together.

“The first day of preseason camp can be a little overwhelming and the freshmen sometimes outnumber the upperclassmen.” Healey said. This season that rang especially true, with 13 players from the '08 squad not returning. “There were a lot of news faces, but we gelled together immediately and realized we were in it together.”

Healey has one goal and four assists in the 2009 season, the four assists already rank as a personal-best in a season.
