Feb. 21 — The Kutztown University baseball team, led by Shayne Houck (fr. Barto/Boyertown) and James Quigley (so. Bensalem/Bensalem) , battled back to defeat Bloomsburg University 13-11 in the nightcap of the Builder Invitational Saturday.
The Golden Bears (6-2) trailed 11-4 after 3 1/2 innings, but a run in the bottom of the fourth, two in the seventh and six in the eighth helped lead them back.
Kevin Morganti (jr. Reading/Muhlenberg) started on the mound for KU giving up 11 runs over the first four innings, but settled down and pitched shutout ball in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings to collect the win. Jason Herr (so. Harrisburg/C.D. East) pitched a scoreless ninth to collect the save.
Houck finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Quigley was 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Corey Buletza (so. St. Clair/Pottsville) was 3-for-6, including a double in the eighth to give KU a 13-11 lead.
Chad Lightcap (sr. Boyertown/Boyertown) scored three runs, while Mike Kacelowicz (jr. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) and Jared Frey (jr. Mohrsville/Schuylkill Valley) each scored twice. Frey was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Kacelowicz was 2-for-5 with an RBI.
Dom Fantanarosa (sr. Coatesville/Coatesville), who scored twice, recorded the game-tying RBI single in the eighth.
KU will return to the diamond Sunday and play Bloomsburg as the No. 1 seed in the championship game at 3 p.m. KU is 4-0 at the invitational, scoring 54 runs, while Bloomsburg is 2-2.
