Eighth-ranked Kutztown remains perfect with road win at UDC

WASHINGTON, D.C. (December 9, 2009) The Kutztown University men's basketball team held off a late University of District of Columbia rally to claim an 82-76 victory at the UDC Sports Complex Wednesday night.

Kutztown, ranked eighth in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches'/Division II top 25, placed four players in double figures to improve its overall record to 5-0. The host Firebirds, playing their home opener fell to 0-8

Kutztown senior guard and Division II National Player of the Year candidate Stephen Dennis (West Chester, PA/Henderson) (West Chester/Henderson) scored a team-high 26 points on an efficient 12-for-17 shooting. During the game, Dennis became the second KU men's basketball player to reach 1,700 career points. He has scored 1,715 career poin

However, Dennis had plenty of help as junior center Ryan Washington (Philadelphia, PA/Wissahickon) (Philadelphia/Wissahickon) recorded his second double-double in his last three games with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Junior forward Tamir Johnson (Philadelphia, PA/Imhotep Charter) (Philadelphia/Imhotep Charter) contributed 12 points and four rebounds. Junior guard Julius Gray (Lincoln University, PA/Oxford Area High School) (Lincoln University/Oxford) also reached double figures with 10 poin

UDC was paced by Keith Brooks, who scored a game-high 28 points and made six 3-pointers.

For the fourth time this season, Kutztown made over 50 percent of its shots. The Golden Bears made 55.9 percent of their shots (33-for-59). Kutztown missed nine shots in the second half

The game featured eight lead changes in the first nine minutes before Kutztown grabbed control. A Dennis jumper with 11 minutes, 50 seconds remaining in the opening half gave the Golden Bears a 16-15 lead it would never relinquish and started an 11-0 Kutztown blitz. Gray was active during the burst as he scored five points and had a steal that helped Kutztown open a 25-15 advantage with 9:52 remaining

The Golden Bears kept the Firebirds at arms' length for the remainder of the half. UDC cut Kutztown's lead to 30-25 with 5:57 remaining in the first half. That would be as close as the Firebirds would get as Kutztown opened a 41-30 intermission lead

Kutztown controlled the first 12 minutes of the second half as it constructed its largest advantage, 70-49 following a Johnson dunk that shook the UDC Sports Complex to its core with 8:21 remaining. The Firebirds began harassing the Golden Bears as they sliced Kutztown's bulge to 75-69 with 2:21 remaining. UDC would get no closer

The Golden Bears won the battle of benches, 15-14, thanks to important contributions throughout the game from junior guard Steve Coffey (Reading, PA/Wilson) (Reading/Wilson), sophomore forward Ryan White (Philadelphia, PA/Franklin Learning Center) (Philadelphia/Franklin Learning Center), freshman forward Jon DeShields (Chester, PA/Life Center) (Federalsburg, MD/Life Center) and freshman Zack Hankerson (Easton/Easton Area). They also combined for 16 of KU's 36 rebounds.

Kutztown returns to action on Saturday December 19 when it visits Holy Family University for a 3 p.m. start.
