Kutztown defeats East Stroudsburg 1-0 for playoff berth

KUTZTOWN, PA (October 24, 2009) – The Kutztown University women's soccer team claimed a 1-0 shutout victory over Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East rival East Stroudsburg at Keystone Field. With the victory, Kutztown clinched a spot in the PSAC playoffs.

The shutout marks Kutztown's 11th of the season. This was a nice bounce back victory for the Golden Bears after losing to West Chester earlier in the week. The loss ended their eight-game unbeaten streak.

Kutztown (12-3-2, 7-2-1), displayed great footwork in the first half, working together to dominate the field. The 12 wins matches KU's total from 2008.

The only goal of the game was scored early in the match. Perched in front of the net, Chelsea Bressler (Cleona, PA/Annville-Cleona) (Cleona/Annville-Cleona) turned around, passed the ball to Molly Cooper (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) (Palmyra/Palmyra) who drove it past ESU goalkeeper Michelle Ginn 15 minutes into the game.

The Golden Bears took a total of 12 shots on ESU, nine of them within the first half. Shannon Pennock (Mansfield, N.J./Northern Burlington) (Mansfield, N.J./Northern Burlington), Julie Phegley (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central), Stephanie Barnett (Blandon, PA/Fleetwood) (Blandon/Fleetwood), Bressler and Cooper each had two shots on goal. ESU's goalkeeper, Ginn had eight saves for the day.

During the first half, the Golden Bear defense limited the Warriors to three shots on goal. In the second half, ESU turned on the heat, taking 10 shots. KU's Alyssa Hackelberg (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) tallied seven saves.

Kutztown entered the match, ranked 14th in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Top 25, and second in the Atlantic Region.

Playoff seeding will be determined after next week's matches. Kutztown closes the season on Wednesday Oct. 28 at Millersville beginning at 6 p.m. and at home against Bloomsburg on Saturday Oct. 31 at 1 p.m.

The playoffs are slated to begin on Nov. 4.
