KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Drew Folmar announced his resignation as head football coach at Kutztown University on Wednesday to become the offensive coordinator at Lehigh University, effective this Friday, Jan. 24.
Folmar directed KU's offense and coached its quarterbacks since 2009, and was promoted to Kutztown's head coach prior to the 2013 season. He turned the Kutztown offense into one of the most prolific units in NCAA Division II during his time at KU.
Under his instruction, the Golden Bears set numerous offensive records. The 2010 team had the greatest year in the 95-season history of the program, making the first playoff appearance in school history. Kutztown set a school record for wins (10), conference victories (six), points scored (466) and consecutive wins to start a season (nine).
In 2011, KU rewrote its record books and set a school-record for wins in a season (11), points (487), passing touchdowns (41), total touchdowns (68), and rushing yards (2,576). Kutztown won seven games in 2012 and set another school record for points scored with 490. The offense ranked fourth in Division II in scoring at 44.5 points per game and was sixth in passing and 10th in total offense.
Kutztown was 4-7 last season under Folmar, winning four of its final six games of the campaign to finish 3-4 and in fifth place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division.
Folmar was crucial in the development of the most highly decorated quarterback in school history, Kevin Morton. Under Folmar's tutelage, Morton was twice named the PSAC East Offensive Player of the Year and was voted the Kutztown Male Athlete of the Year three times. A three-time All-PSAC East pick, Morton was a two-time regional finalist for the Division II Player of the Year Award, the Harlon Hill Trophy. Morton set nine game, season or career records at Kutztown and is fourth all-time in Division II in passing touchdowns, 11th in passing yards and one of just 19 Division II players to have thrown for 10,000 yards and 100 touchdowns.
"We are thankful for the time that Drew Folmar spent with us, as he played a key part in the greatest success in the history of Kutztown football," Kutztown University Athletics Director
Greg Bamberger said. "He has decided to take an opportunity, and in this profession, that is part of the business. This is ultimately what Drew feels is best for him and his family, and we wish him great success."
The university will begin a national search immediately for Folmar's replacement. The remaining staff will continue to handle the day-to-day operations of the program.
"We are going to conduct a national search and try to bring someone in as soon as we possibly can," Bamberger said. "We know this is a key time for recruiting, and our coaches in place will continue to keep the program running as we prepare for the 2014 season."
