Kutztown earns important early road win to begin PSAC play at Shepherd

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Kutztown women's soccer opened PSAC conference play in a thrilling game defeating Sheperd on the road 5-3, Saturday afternoon in a back-and-forth battle between the last two PSAC championship finalists.
 
Kutztown and Sheperd entered the game with recent history between its programs. The Rams have defeated the Golden Bears in each of the last two PSAC championship games, making Saturdays game highly anticipated.
 
Sheperd didn't waste time opening the scoring 3:12 into the game with Meritt Delk finding the back of the net to go ahead 1-0. The Golden Bears came right back on the offensive end with a goal from Carly Louey (Hanover, Pa./South Western) at 6:35 to tie the game. KU kept pushing forward with a goal from Giavanna Marciano (Trappe, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) at 10:01 to take the 2-1 lead. Kutztown kept control of the rest of the half with 5 attempts on net taking them into half with the score 2-1 in its favor.
 
The second half brought exciting back and forth play, starting with Sheperd scoring 4 minutes into the half by Aniyah Parker. Kutztown continued to answer, taking back the 3-2 lead with a goal from Maura Day (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Abington) at the 68th minute. The Rams then came back with a goal 26 seconds later by Olivia Garderner, bringing the game to a 3-3 tie. Corinne Morgan (Port Republic, N.J./Cedar Creek) wound up giving her team the winning goal at 72nd minute. The Golden Bears closed out the game with Marciano scoring her second goal of the game at 81:08 for a final score of 5-3.
 
KU outshot Sheperd 18-12 overall and 9-7 on goal. With a 6-4 conner kick advantage. The eight combined goals marked the most goals scored between the two teams since they began playing each other with Saturdays game serving as their 23rd meeting. With this game being the 2nd straight season victory at Sheperd.
 
After starting the season on a four-game road trip, Kutztown returns home Wednesday, Sept 9, at Keystone Field, for a 7 p.m. start. The Golden Bears enter its home opener at 3-1-0 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play, riding a four-game unbeaten streak.
