MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Katie Yocum (Hanover, Pa./South Western) was flawless Wednesday afternoon at Chryst Field, converting all six of her shots into goals to lead No. 15 Kutztown to a 16-5 victory over Millersville in PSAC East action.
Yocum's perfect shooting performance marked her second game with exactly six goals, her third game with six or more goals, and her fourth game with six or more points this season. The senior spread her scoring across three quarters, two goals in the first, three in the second, and one in the fourth, to pace the Golden Bears' balanced offensive attack.
The victory was reminiscent of the teams' first meeting on March 21 at Keystone Field, when No. 15 Kutztown (9-5, 5-4 PSAC East) used a six-goal second quarter to pull away for a 13-6 win. This time, the Golden Bears delivered that knockout punch from the opening draw.
Millersville (5-9, 3-7 PSAC East) struck first at 12:08, but Kutztown answered with eight unanswered goals, six in the first quarter alone, to seize control and never look back.
The Bears outscored the Marauders in every quarter while limiting Millersville to two goals or fewer in each frame. After the opening quarter's 6-1 advantage, Kutztown won the second 4-2, the third 2-1, and the fourth 4-1 to cruise to the 16-5 final.
Beyond Yocum's six-goal performance,
Madison Wenner (Marmora, N.J./Ocean City) recorded her fifth hat trick of the season. A trio of Golden Bears—
Sophie Engelhardt (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley),
Maddie Wagner (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township), and
Lauren LaMorte (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip)—each tallied four points on two goals and two assists.
LaMorte's two assists were particularly significant, bringing her season total to 28 to tie for fourth all-time at Kutztown in single-season assists. The performance also pushed her to 57 career assists, tied for fourth all-time in program history.
Isabella Montuori (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) rounded out the scoring with one goal, while freshman
Olivia Lewis (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May Regional) notched her first career assist and
Alexis Plesic (Hanover, Pa./South Western) added two helpers. Nine of Kutztown's 16 goals came off assists.
The Golden Bears dominated statistically across the board, holding edges in shots (33-16), shots on goal (21-11), and draw controls (15-8). Reigning PSAC East Defensive Athlete of the Week
Summer Davis (Beach Haven, N.J./Southern Regional) led both teams with six draw controls.
In goal,
Marisa Bragg (Ringoes, N.J./Hunterdon Central) turned away eight shots and surpassed the 100-save mark for the season, now sitting at 102.
The Golden Bears are off Saturday and host Bloomsburg on Wednesday, April 22, at Keystone Field with a 3 p.m. start time.
