Henn records 200th career hit as Kutztown and West Chester each win a game Tuesday

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Junior center fielder Emily Henn (Matamoras, Pa./Delaware Valley) continued to climb up the program leader boards and checked off a milestone Tuesday as she earned her 200th career hit in game two of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division split doubleheader with West Chester from North Campus Field.

The Golden Bears (16-12 overall, 7-3 PSAC East) outlasted the Golden Rams (15-11, 7-3) in a 4-3 win in 10 innings in game one, but could not complete the comeback in a 4-3 defeat in game two.

Henn, who leads the PSAC in hits this season with 42, had a four hit day Tuesday with two in each game, and scored three runs. She ranks fourth in the conference in runs scored with 24. Henn became just the 15th player in program history to reach 200 career hits, the last was her former teammate, Brianna Stocklin (Deptford, N.J./Deptford Township), who graduated last year.

Jamie Madara (Levittown, Pa./Academy of the New Church) finished with two hits and each of Morgan Slomkowski (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East), Alexa Stevens (Jefferson Township, Pa./North Pocono), Ashley Schulz (Oreland, Pa./Springfield), Samantha Paetow (Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg), Morgan Kocher (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) and Sophia Johnston (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) all had one, with the latter two contributing an RBI each.

Haley Gravish (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg) earned the victory inside the circle in game one, coming on in relief in the seventh inning and throwing the final four innings. She now has 11 wins on the year, second-most in the PSAC.

Kutztown hits the road once again for the third time this week and will play two at Millersville this Friday, April 3, beginning at 1 p.m.

Kutztown 4, West Chester 3 (10 inn.)

In a sloppy game defensively filled with four combined errors, three from West Chester, it was the final WCU error, a throwing error, that allowed the tying and go-ahead runs to score in the bottom of the 10th inning for Kutztown.

Stevens ripped a ground ball to shortstop, who fielded it, looked home first at a moving Jenna Piatkiewicz (Fogelsville, Pa./Parkland) from third to home, but decided to quickly throw to first base. The ball went passed the first baseman and allowed Henn to also race home from second base and KU could walk off as winners.

The Golden Rams got on the scoreboard first with a run in the top of the second on a KU error. The Golden Bears answered with a run in the bottom-half of the frame thanks to a West Chester fielding error.

WCU got another one back in the top of the third to go back ahead 2-1 and its advantage would stay that way until the bottom of the sixth. Stevens connected one a one-out double that chased Golden Rams starter Maci Strechay, who allowed just two hits through five-and-a-third innings. No. 1 pitcher, Danielle Ciliberto entered and Slomkowski quickly jumped on her stuff, lacing a single to left field that brought home Stevens to tie the score at 2-2.

Following three scoreless innings, each team received a runner to be put on second base at the start of the inning from the 10th on. West Chester took advantage of it first, scoring the go-ahead run off zero hits to go up 3-2. In the bottom-half, Henn reached safely on an error, Kocher recorded a sacrifice bunt to get the runners to second and third with one out. Stevens then did her part with some help from the WCU defense.

Gravish entered in relief in the top of the seventh inning and finished the game, throwing four innings, allowing just two hits and an unearned run to earn her 11th victory of the season.

West Chester 4, Kutztown 3

Kutztown once again had to try and rally late in the game, but this time it was unable to.

KU took an early 1-0 lead after Johnston's RBI single to center field in the bottom of the second inning that scored pinch runner Leanna Schenk (Roslyn, Pa./Abington). It was just the second career hit for the freshman in just her sixth at-bat of the season.

But West Chester responded in its next at-bats with a three-run top of the third inning, highlighted by a sacrifice fly and two RBI singles to go ahead 3-1.

The Maroon and Gold cut their deficit in half with Kocher's sacrifice fly in the bottom part of the third, but Maread Hopkins of the Golden Rams connected on a solo home run in the top of the seventh for a much-needed insurance run.

The Golden Bears had the winning run at the plate with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Ciliberto was able to close the door in the end after Stevens cut the deficit to 4-3 with a run-scoring groundout.
