Kutztown falls to Lock Haven for second time in matchup of top two teams in the PSAC East

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – In a matchup of the top two teams in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division, host Lock Haven got the better of Kutztown for the second time during the regular season, winning 65-54 Saturday afternoon at Thomas Fieldhouse.

The defeat snapped a season-long three-game win streak for the Golden Bears (13-9 overall, 9-6 PSAC). The Bald Eagles (17-5, 13-3) have now won 11 games in-a-row.

KU was outscored in every quarter but the fourth quarter (18-16). LHU led 19-15 after the first quarter, 34-25 at halftime and 49-36 after three. Kutztown pulled to within just six at 53-47 with 5:51 to play after a jump shot from Jadyn Brenneman (New Fairfield, Conn./Western Reserve Academy), but that was the closest the Maroon and Gold would get the rest of the way.

Smelas finished with her first double-double of the season, ending with 15 points and 11 rebounds, along with four steals and two assists. Danae Ellzy (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) tallied 12 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists. Ariana Smuda (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) recorded nine points, eight rebounds and a career-high six blocks. Leila Hurley (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Jim Thorpe) netted eight points, both Madison Siggins (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) and Brenneman had four points with Siggins grabbing four boards, and Kitty Randa (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) rounded out the scoring with two points.

Kutztown is back at home in its next game, Wednesday, Feb. 11, when it welcomes Shippensburg to Keystone Arena for a PSAC East game at 5:30 p.m.
