PEMBROKE, N.C. – Sophomore
Abbey Wagner (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) threw a complete game shutout for her first victory of 2026 and both
Morgan Slomkowski (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) and
Jamie Madara (Levittown, Pa./Academy of the New Church) totaled two RBIs as No. 16 Kutztown defeated Chowan 6-0 Saturday afternoon on day two at the UNC Pembroke Invitational.
Â
The Golden Bears (2-1 overall) are back over .500 after splitting the first two games in Pembroke, N.C., on Friday afternoon.
Â
Wagner allowed just four hits, half of which came in the first inning, and earned her first win inside the circle since March 29, of last season.
Â
KU scored a run in the bottom of the first inning, two in the third and three more in the fifth. Slomkowski doubled in
Emily Henn (Matamoras, Pa./Delaware Valley) in the first to put the Maroon and Gold on the scoreboard and then had an RBI single in the third, later scoring on a
Samantha Paetow (Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg) run-scoring double. In the fifth inning, Kutztown brought seven batters to the plate and had its damage done by
Jenna Piatkiewicz's (Fogelsville, Pa./Parkland) first RBI of the season on a single that brought in
Taylor Gearhart (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North), and then a Madara two-run triple that scored Piatkiewicz and
Alexa Stevens (Jefferson Township, Pa./North Pocono).
Â
Wagner was never really troubled inside the circle. The Hawks had a baserunner at second base twice, once in the first and another time in the third, but neither got any further. She had five 1-2-3 innings.
Â
Slomkowski was 2-for-3 with the two RBIs and a run scored. Madara, Stevens, Paetow, Piatkiewicz and
Parker Kraus (Doylestown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) all had a hit in the lineup.
Â
Kutztown concludes opening weekend at the Pembroke Invitational with another single game tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 8, at 10 a.m., against Felician. The two teams met on Friday with the Golden Falcons winning the game 6-4.
