SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The 18th-ranked Kutztown University wrestling team trounced the Shippensburg Raiders, 43-3, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference dual inside Heiges Field House on Friday night.
The Golden Bears (5-4, 3-2 PSAC) claimed bonus team points in four of its first five bouts while finishing with six technical falls on the night, once again posting a strong finish to top the Raiders (6-11, 1-5 PSAC), snapping its opponent's two game winning streak while getting back above .500 on the season.
Kutztown opened the scoring with back-to-back technical falls from redshirt juniors
Nic Allison (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) at 125 pounds and
Javien DeLeon (Allentown, Pa./Liberty) at 133 pounds. A dozen team points were added in the three bouts that followed, headlined by graduate student
Hunter Horton (James Creek, Pa./Tussey Mountain) securing five of those points in his six and a half minute technical fall at 157 pounds.
After dropping its lone bout to Shippensburg's only ranked grappler at 165 pounds, Maroon and Gold technical falls lit up the scoreboard in each of the next three bouts, the last of which came in a 17-0 win by seventh-ranked 197-pound grappler
Wayne McIntyre (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) to wrap up the contested bouts.
The dual concluded with a forfeit victory for an extra six team points awarded to Kutztown.
The 40-point win was the team's largest margin of victory over the Raiders in its 18th meeting on record, with Kutztown winning each of the past 13 meetings. It also represents the squad's largest margin of victory in a conference dual this season.
The Golden Bears return home to Keystone Arena for Senior Night, where it will face the East Stroudsburg Warriors in its final conference dual competition of the season on Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m. The regular season concludes at the Futures Tournament, hosted by Millersville, on Sunday, Feb. 22, starting at 10 a.m.
