LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – With a one-minute, 27-second pin capping off the team's five-pin night in Friday's victory over Millersville, 285-pound senior
Freddie Retter (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) of the 18th-ranked Kutztown University wrestling team was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Wrestling Athlete of the Week, as announced by the organization Tuesday afternoon.
Retter, who made his return to the mat just two duals ago after a stellar season with the Golden Bears' football team, reminded everyone why he entered the season ranked third in the nation in his weight class. He took control of Millersville's Kurt Scheuerman shortly after the first whistle, rushing his opponent and securing a takedown 75 seconds into the contest. After the Quakertown, Pa., native held Scheuerman in position for a four-point near-fall, it took 12 seconds and a light lean from Retter to get full control and secure the six-point fall.
For the reigning All-American grappler, it was his 12th career victory and fourth career pin in the Maroon and Gold. The victory now moves him to 12-4 lifetime, while he recorded the third fastest pin of his career and the quickest among the five Kutztown pins on Friday night.
This marks the third conference recognition for a Kutztown grappler, as 125-pound
Nic Allison (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) and 197-pound
Wayne McIntyre (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) each claimed a weekly honor from the conference earlier in the year.
Retter and the Golden Bears (4-4, 2-2 PSAC) will look to carry this momentum into its next dual against the Shippensburg Raiders on Friday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m. inside Heiges Field House. The Golden Bears return to Keystone Arena for Senior Night the following Tuesday, Feb. 17, when it hosts East Stroudsburg at 7 p.m.
