KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The No. 9 Kutztown University women's soccer earned a 2-1 victory over Shepherd on Saturday afternoon in a PSAC East matchup at Keystone Field with goals coming from
Sarah Bronico (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) and
Carly Louey (Hanover, Pa./South Western).
The Golden Bears (8-1-2 overall, 6-1-1 PSAC East) carried momentum from their first matchup against the Rams, a 5-3 road victory, finding the back of the net late in the opening half before adding another goal early in the second half.
Bronico broke through the back and forth play in the 42nd minute, scoring off an assist from
Emma Gonzalez (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove), giving KU a 1-0 lead heading into the halftime. Kutztown wasted little time adding to its advantage after the break. Two minutes into the second half, Louey headed home a corner from Bronico for her second point of the afternoon. Pushing the Golden Bears' lead to 2-0.
Shepherd continued to battle, adding to the scoreboard in the 84th minute. Merritt Delk scored off an assist from Olivia Gardner, making it a 2-1 game with time remaining.
The Golden Bears' defense held firm to preserve the victory and move to 2-0 against Shepherd this season. Kutztown defeated the Rams, 5-3, in the team's first meeting at Shepherd earlier this season.
KU finished with a 13-8 advantage in shots and held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks. Shepherd placed six of its eight shots on goal, while Kutztown recorded five shots on target.
Morgan O'Donnell (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) had her second game with five saves to help secure the win.Â
Kutztown will head back on the road for a rematch against East Stroudsburg, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m.
