KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Left fielder Bo Barthol (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland) sent home five runs, including four on a grand slam in the second inning, leading the Kutztown University baseball team to a 9-4 victory over the Adelphi Panthers on Wednesday afternoon at North Campus Field.
The Golden Bears (9-18) broke a five-game skid with an incredible performance that included contributions from Barthol, center fielder Zach Tropiano (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) and designated hitter Jared Ferguson (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico), as well as a stellar start from starter Tyler Cleveland (Pillow, Pa./Upper Dauphin) to tame the Panthers (14-12), who were coming off of several tough series against conference opponents.
Adelphi made the opening strike in the first inning with a single to the right side that advanced a runner home and moved an additional player into scoring position. Kutztown managed to control the game from that point on, rattling off nine straight runs, capped off by a Barthol single that brought in Tropiano.
The Panthers made a push in the late innings, creating traffic on the basepaths in the seventh inning and scoring three of their four runs in the final three frames, but fell short in the end against KU.
Cleveland threw six innings while allowing five hits and a run while striking out eight of 22 batters faced on the afternoon for the Golden Bears. Bobby Milinaro took the loss, giving up seven runs in 2.2 innings, while Cam Letourneau threw 51 pitches in 2.1 innings while being tagged with the other two runs on the afternoon.
Kutztown returns to conference play when they travel to Shepherdstown, W. Va., to face Shepherd in a PSAC East doubleheader on Friday, April 4, before the teams come to North Campus Field for another doubleheader on Saturday, April 5. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m., both days.
