LOCK HAVEN, Pa. –
Brianna Stocklin (Deptford, N.J./Deptford Township) continued her recent power surge as she homered for the second straight day, joining
Alexa Stevens (Covington Township, Pa./North Pocono) in that realm as No. 16 Kutztown won game one before dropping game two at Lock Haven in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Golden Bears (32-13 overall, 16-10 PSAC) used long balls from Stocklin and Stevens, along with an RBI single out of
Kristin Geesey (Bainbridge, Pa./Elizabethtown) and the arm of starting pitcher
Haley Gravish (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg) to take the opener 4-2. The Bald Eagles (15-23, 9-19) more than doubled up the Maroon and Gold in hits (9-4) to come out on top in game two on their home field, 3-2.
Â
Samantha Paetow (Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg) finished with four hits and an RBI. Stocklin,
Naya Darnowski (Manchester, N.J./Manchester Township) and
Emily Henn (Matamoras, Pa./Delaware Valley) each recorded two hits, with Darnowski and Stocklin contributing an RBI and Henn scoring a run. Stevens tallied two RBIs and a run scored, while Geesey had a hit and an RBI.
Morgan Slomkowski (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) also finished with a hit on the day.
Â
Gravish started game one and threw a complete game, giving up just two runs, to earn her 20th victory of the season.
Â
Kutztown begins the final week of the regular season next week at home, hosting Shepherd on Tuesday, April 22, for another PSAC East doubleheader with game one beginning at 1 p.m.
Â
Kutztown 4, Lock Haven 2
Â
Just as it did Friday, Kutztown started off the day on the right foot by winning the opening game.
Â
It all started again with Stocklin in the leadoff position of the lineup. The senior center fielder connected on her fourth home run of the season and third in the last three games as she got the scoring going with a solo shot in the top of the third inning to give KU a 1-0 lead. Three batters later, after a Henn single, Stevens added some much-needed insurance runs with a two-run home run over the left center field wall and 3-0 advantage.
Â
Lock Haven cut its deficit to just one with a two-run single by Maria Fratangelo in the bottom of the fourth to trail 3-2.
Â
The Golden Bears tacked on one more run in the top of the sixth. Slomkowski led off with a walk and then Paetow followed with a single. Two batters later, Geesey connected on a run-scoring single up the middle, her first RBI since April 5.
Â
That was all Gravish needed as the senior got the final six outs facing just seven batters.
Â
Lock Haven 3, Kutztown 2
Â
Kutztown finished with just four hits, three of which came off the bat of Paetow, who went 3-for-3, including an RBI single in the top of the sixth inning to put her team on the scoreboard. Darnowski had the other hit for KU, an RBI double in the seventh, that put the Golden Bears out in front for the first time in the game at 2-1.
Â
But the Bald Eagles got out of that inning with no more damage and then recorded four hits out of the first five batters, including a leadoff double to get things going. They did enough to bring home two runs and walk-if-off for the win.
