No. 21 Softball continues Florida tour with victories over Caldwell, Barry Saturday in Miami Shores

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The 21st-ranked Kutztown softball team is starting another win streak after winning 11 games in-a-row to begin the 2025 regular season. After taking the second game at Palm Beach Atlantic Friday evening, KU won both games of its mixed doubleheader Saturday afternoon, first defeating Caldwell 3-1 in eight innings and following that up with a 6-2 victory over host Barry University in Miami Shores, Fla.

The Golden Bears (14-1 overall) totaled 11 hits on the day, the same as their two opponents combined, but were able to do what matters more in the score column.

For the second day in-a-row, Sarah Harvat (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) led the lineup in hitting, finishing with four hits in five at-bats, while adding three RBIs and scoring a run. Her lone hit in the opener was a double that tied the game in the top of the seventh inning before Emily Henn (Matamoras, Pa./Delaware Valley) and Naya Darnowski (Manchester, N.J./Manchester Township) each recorded an RBI in the eighth to push KU to the win. Morgan Slomkowski (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) tallied three hits, an RBI and scored two runs and Henn had two hits, two runs and two RBIs on the day.

Amanda Slabicki (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) threw all eight innings and allowed just one run in the win over the Cougars to improve to a perfect 3-0 on the season inside the circle. Not to be outdone, Abbey Wagner (Quakertown, Pa./Qaukertown) also threw a complete game for the win against the Bucs and is also 3-0 on the year.

Kutztown next travels to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for a twin bill at Nova Southeastern tomorrow, Sunday, March 9, beginning at 2 p.m.

Kutztown 3, Caldwell 1 (8 inn.)

Kutztown was held without a hit the first four innings until Slomkowski broke the no-hitter with a single in the top of the fifth. But KU was still held scoreless and went 1-2-3 in the sixth, three outs away from defeat as Caldwell scored a run in its first at-bats.

Alexa Stevens (Covington Township, Pa./North Pocono) and Slomkowski had back-to-back singles to begin the top of the seventh inning. After an out to the next batter, Harvat came up clutch and sent a pitch the opposite way to right field for a game-tying double.

In the eighth, Brianna Stocklin (Deptford, N.J./Deptford Township) advanced Jenna Piatkiewicz (Fogelsville, Pa./Parkland) to third base on a sacrifice bunt and then Henn delivered the clinching hit with a triple. Darnowski followed with a sacrifice fly to bring in Henn for an insurance run.

Slabicki struck out three and gave up just five hits, walking none.

Kutztown 6, Barry 2

Kutztown scored early and often in this one, recording a run in both the top of the first and third innings and three in the second, then added another in the fifth.

Slomkowski hit an RBI sacrifice fly in the first that brought around Henn for the first run of the game. An error, a groundout and a Darnowski single accounted for the three runs in the second.

Barry got on the scoreboard and pulled two runs back in bottom of the second, then Harvat continued her two-day tear with an RBI double in the third to put her team up 5-2. She then capped the scoring with an RBI single in the top of the fifth.

Wagner finished with two strikeouts and gave up just six hits.
