ERIE, Pa. – Kutztown and Gannon were in a back-and-forth affair in the first half, but the fifth-ranked Golden Knights came out of the locker room on fire and outscored KU 41-20 in the second half to win the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover matchup 70-48 Tuesday afternoon in Erie.
Â
It was the first conference game for the Golden Bears (3-4 overall, 0-1 PSAC) since their last contest against IUP was considered non-conference for KU.
Â
In a rematch of last season's PSAC semifinal round game on March 8, that the Maroon and Gold were victorious 64-58, on their way to the program's first PSAC title, Gannon amassed some revenge and showed why they are a top-10 team nationally with the strong second half to pull away.
Â
Ariana Smuda (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) made a layup to tie the game at 28-28 with 1:11 left in the second quarter and then GU's Maddy Wheatley went 1-for-2 at the free-throw line to give her team a 29-28 edge heading into intermission. But then the Golden Knights left the locker room and scored the opening 10 points of the third quarter to go on top 39-28.
Â
A
Madison Siggins (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) 3-pointer cut the Kutztown deficit to just six at 44-38 with 1:23 to play in the frame, but that was the closest KU would get the rest of the way as Gannon closed the quarter on an 8-2 run.
Â
Siggins led the Golden Bears with 13 points, tying a season-high, going 4-for-8 from the floor and adding two assists and two steals.
Olivia Smelas (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Jim Thorpe) stuffed the stat sheet and just missed a double-double, finishing with nine points, eight rebounds, four assists, three blocks and a steal. Both
Bella Quinn (Ashland, Ky./Russell) and
Taylor Gurysh (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) tallied eight points with the latter grabbing three boards.
Leila Hurley (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Jim Thorpe) recorded six points and Smuda rounded out the scoring with four points.
Â
Kutztown will look to halt its longest losing streak of the season (two) when it has back-to-back home PSAC contests this weekend, first against Clarion on Saturday and then Pitt-Johnstown on Sunday. Both games from Keystone Arena begin at 1 p.m.
