Kutztown battles back in third set but falls to rival West Chester

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's volleyball team managed to stay in the match with a thrilling, 28-26 set three victory, but ultimately dropped a challenging Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division contest to the West Chester Golden Rams, 3-1, inside Hollinger Fieldhouse on Friday evening.

The Golden Bears (12-13, 4-7 PSAC East) were looking to get a game above .500 against one of the top teams in the conference, but the Golden Rams (19-6, 7-4 PSAC East) had a goal of improving its playoff positioning, a task they likely accomplished in their home victory.

West Chester claimed the first two sets, 25-19 and 25-14, and while KU got the edge in a close set three, 28-26, WCU put the game away in the fourth frame, 25-22.

The Golden Rams stayed on the defensive in the first two sets, never allowing KU to get within two points of tying the set at any point throughout the night. The team carried a 50 percent hitting mark through the first two frames, giving them all the momentum heading into a pivotal third set.

The third set saw Kutztown gain a 10-5 advantage with libero Saige Thibodeaux (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida S. Baker) at the line, as her ace serve and a pair of Madilyn Bogovic (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) kills gave the Maroon and Gold the edge. West Chester rallied back to 14 apiece and rattled off four straight points to bring up match point, but KU held strong and forced a pair of WCU errors. A third error gave Kutztown its second set point opportunity at 27-26, and Grace White (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakertown) put the frame away with a kill a point later. The team's winning set featured 17 kills and five aces, both the highest marks in any set on the night.

Sophomore Emma Baldridge (Damascus, Md./Damascus) opened the fourth set with a pair of service aces on the way to a 3-0 advantage, but West Chester quickly responded and built a strong lead through the middle of the set. Kutztown used three- and four-point swings in the latter part to bring the set within one, but the Golden Rams managed to hold off KU and pick up the match victory.

Bogovic led the team with 16 kills and 11 digs, playing a huge role in the third set win. Junior Paige Skinner (Placerville, Calif./Ponderosa) served up a team-high four aces and had 14 kills on the night to lead the team with 18 points, while Baldridge had 43 set assists, 13 digs and a pair of ace serves for KU. Thibodeaux tallied 17 digs, four assists and an ace, while White and freshman Lauren Montgomery (Norristown, Pa./Mount Saint Joseph Academy) each had nine kills in defeat.

The Golden Bears will finish off its road schedule against Millersville tomorrow, November 8, at 2 p.m., before returning home for a pair of matches next weekend against Shepherd (Friday, Nov. 14, at 6 p.m.) and Shippensburg (Saturday, Nov. 15, at 4 p.m.) at Keystone Arena.
