BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The sixth-ranked Kutztown University wrestling team dominated the Bridgeport Open on Saturday, claiming five first-place finishes while no grappler finished lower than sixth place in the third tournament of the season at the Wheeler Recreation Center on the campus of Bridgeport University.
Four wrestlers claimed their top spots through the traditional bracket route for the Golden Bears, as No. 14 Javien DeLeon (Allentown, Pa./Liberty), Hunter Horton (James Creek, Pa./Tussey Mountain), No. 3 Bailey Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) and No. 8 Cole Casilio (Wilcox, Pa./Johnsonburg) finished first at the top of the 133, 157, 165 and 184-pound brackets, respectively. The 197-pound group was topped by seventh-ranked redshirt junior Wayne McIntyre (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg North), who wrestled to a 5-0 record that included four sub-minute pins.
Sixth-ranked 174-pound grappler Dalton Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) and 184-pound Ty Pfizenmayer (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) each claimed second-place finishes, the latter of which came as a result of another Kutztown finisher picking up the spot ahead of the junior grappler. The 184-pound semifinal round was all Maroon and Gold, as Casilio and Pfizenmayer defeated Isaiah Feeney (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown) and Alex Ward (Manassas, Va./Battlefield) to set up the meeting in the final round.
Casilio, who made his Kutztown debut after coming over as a graduate transfer from Gannon University, collected a pair of pins and a technical fall in his first-place finish, backing up the eighth-place ranking he holds from the National Wrestling Coaches Association.
Bronze medal finishes went to Logan Hrenenko (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) at 141 pounds, Ryan Schimpf (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) at 157 pounds, and Ward at 184 pounds, who made it full circle to top Feeney in the third-place matchup.
The NWCA released its rankings on Thursday, Nov. 20, bumping Kutztown up a spot to sixth in the nation with 49 points. The Golden Bears sit one spot behind No. 5 Gannon, while No. 8 Pitt-Johnstown is the only other Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference team in the rankings.
As for individual rankings, DeLeon made his debut at No. 14 this week, while five other Golden Bears remain in the polls: No. 3 B. Gimbor (165), No. 6 D. Gimbor (174), No. 8 Casilio (184), No. 7 McIntyre and No. 3 Retter (285). Casilio made his first appearance of the season in today's outing, while Retter is projected to make his debut in the new year after finishing the season with the No. 3 KU Football team.
The Golden Bears open conference dual competition on Friday, Dec. 5, when they host Seton Hill inside Keystone Arena at 7 p.m.
