Kutztown falls in tight contest with Georgian Court

LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The Kutztown University men's basketball team had a strong performance in its first road battle of the season, but the Georgian Court Lions prevailed 69-66 inside the Wellness Center Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Bears (1-1 overall) saw double-digit scoring from a trio of its star players – led by guard Jalen Bryant's (Edgewood, Md./John Carroll) 20-point performance, but it wasn't enough to take down the Lions (3-1), who gained the edge with late baskets in the final minute.

The Kutztown frontcourt duo of Jordan Nkoa Abessolo (Yaoundé, Cameroon/St. Maria Goretti (Md.)) and Tobi Ogunbare (Dublin, Ireland/Lawrence (Mass.)) combined for 24 points and 27 rebounds (15 on the offensive glass), each picking up a double-double on the day while limiting the opponents to 26 points in the paint.

Kutztown held a nine-point edge at the midway break, aided by the stingy defense holding the Lions to nine field goals in the opening frame. However, the home squad flipped the script in the second half, shooting at a more efficient clip while replicating the defense that was applied against them in the first half.

In the waning seconds, it was Georgian Court that managed to pull out a three-point win.

Bryant hit a pair of threes in his 20-point performance to go along with eight free throws. Nkoa Abessolo paired his 12 points and 15 rebounds with a pair of steals, while Ogunbare had a 12-point, 12-rebound performance while going a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. Senior captain Kameron Roberts (Townsend, Del./Middletown) drilled a pair of threes while playing 24 minutes, while Omari Banks (Middletown, Del./The Phelps School (Pa.)) had seven points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal in 35 minutes of action.

Kutztown returns home for a pair of games to open December, starting with a non-conference game against Frostburg State on Monday, Dec. 1, at 7:30 p.m. and continuing with a Saturday contest against Indiana (Pa.) on December 6 at 3 p.m. inside Keystone Arena.
