Wrestling snags a pair of second-place finishers in loaded Millersville Hitchcock Memorial Open

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The seventh-ranked Kutztown University wrestling team traveled to conference foe Millersville to take part in the "Shorty" Hitchcock Memorial Open Tournament on Saturday, one that was headlined by a plethora of Division I grapplers to go along with a number of stellar college squads and prep and club teams from around the area.

Eighth-ranked 197-pound Wayne McIntyre (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) claimed second place in his weight class with two pins and a technical fall, while 133-pound Javien DeLeon (Allentown, Pa./Liberty) continued his strong start to the season with the same outcome after pinning his quarterfinal opponent and sending his opposing semifinalist to a 24-13, major decision defeat.

Third-ranked 165-pound grappler Bailey Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) looked strong as he tallied three wins on his way to the semifinal round before finishing his day in fourth place in a crowded field. His brother, sixth-ranked 174-pound Dalton Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg), won four of his five matches in his weight class to reach the consolation final round for fifth place, only to meet rookie teammate Tom Grimley (Marmora, N.J./Ocean City) in the bout, one that was made a no-contest.

Six KU wrestlers secured winning records at the end of the night across five different weight classes for yet another strong showing. Other noteworthy performances came from 125-pound Nic Allison (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) (two technical fall wins), 133-pound Javien DeLeon (Allentown, Pa./Liberty) (3-2 record) and 184-pound Ty Pfizenmayer (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) (two pins).

While there was no team score, Kutztown finished fourth among competing groups with 101 total points. Among the Division I competitors was No. 20 Pittsburgh, which traveled with one of the larger contingents from a DI school, finishing the evening in fifth with 87.5 points. Among other DI teams to travel a handful of wrestlers were No. 1 Penn State, No. 21 West Virginia, Navy and Lock Haven, the latter two both receiving votes in the latest Division I poll.

The Golden Bears will be back in action next Saturday, Nov. 22, when the squad competes at the Bridgeport Open in Bridgeport, Conn. Competition is set to start at 10 a.m.
