Soccer blows by Indiana (Pa.) in conference quarterfinals

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – It was a brisk and windy Tuesday in eastern Pennsylvania, and the gusts carried into the evening and seemed to favor the Kutztown University women's soccer team, as they defeated the Indiana (Pa.) Crimson Hawks by a score of 5-1 in the quarterfinal round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championships at Keystone Field.

The Golden Bears (12-4-1, No. 2 PSAC East), led by newly minted All-PSAC First Teamers Corinne Morgan (Port Republic, N.J./Cedar Creek) and Maura Day (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Abington), made efficient shots and precise moves to overcome a tough Crimson Hawks (14-3-2, No. 3 PSAC West) squad, who wrap up their season after a successful regular-season campaign that saw them place among the top three teams in a strong West Division.

Head coach Erik Burstein's squad knew they had their hands full, and they countered by putting the pressure on IUP's defense early. It paid off almost immediately with the conversion of a corner kick off the head of senior Charlotte Rauch (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport) in the opening two minutes. The Golden Bears converted again on a defensive miscue three minutes later, with an Ava Schmidhauser (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) pass finding the boot of Caroline McDonald (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East), who got by an off-balance goaltender to make it a 2-0 game.

KU dominated the opening half, doubling up on shots (8-4) while attempting five corners, keeping its opponent out of the corners on the opposite side of the pitch.

After the Crimson Hawks got on the board to close out the opening half, Morgan notched a second-half hat trick to pad the Golden Bears' lead and put the game away. Her 51st-minute goal bounced in off of a free kick assist from Day, while her 74th-minute strike came from the striker sprinting ahead of the Crimson Hawk defense and landing one to make it a three-score game. A goal off of a feed from rookie Sarah Erb (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) finished off the scoring for KU.

Day, the East Division's Defensive Player of the Year, contributed a pair of assists, her first going to Rauch off of the early corner kick conversion. This brings her team-leading assist total to nine, which puts her in a tie for sixth most all-time in a single season in program history.

KU ended the match leading in shots (12-5), shots on goal (10-5) and corners (7-2), while IUP had the advantage in saves (5-4). Goalkeeper Morgan O'Donnell collected her 12th win of the season, putting her in a tie for eighth place in program history for goalkeeper victories in a season. She made four saves while facing five shots on the chilly evening.

Normally known as a defensive juggernaut, the Golden Bears scored at least five goals for the first time in a postseason game since a 5-1 win over Edinboro in the PSAC Quarterfinals on November 2, 2010. It was also in that game that a KU player last notched a postseason hat trick, as Stephanie Borland tallied three goals for the Maroon and Gold over a decade ago.

It was a dominant day for all four East Division women's soccer programs in the PSAC Championship, as they all collected wins over their West Division opponents. The East's No. 1 West Chester opened the day with a win over West No. 4 Clarion, East No. 2 KU defeated West No. 3 IUP, East No. 3 Shepherd shut out West No. 2 Gannon, 2-0, and East No. 5 Millersville posted a massive, 4-0 upset of West No. 1 Slippery Rock.

The Golden Bears will be on the road at West Chester's Rockwell Field for the remainder of the PSAC Championships, as the Golden Rams earned the opportunity to host based on their top seed in the East Division and their 5-1 victory over Clarion earlier Tuesday. KU will face the fifth-seeded Millersville Marauders on Friday, November 14, at 10 a.m. Ticketing and live viewing information will be released later this week.
