Wrestling wins five weight classes at season-opening tournament

READING, Pa. – The seventh-ranked Kutztown University team had five wrestlers top their respective classes as the team finished atop the standings at the Tonee Ellis Memorial Tournament, hosted by Alvernia University inside the Flynn Plex on Saturday, leading all teams with 241.5 points in a 15-team field.

The Golden Bears had seven top-three finishers at their season-opening tournament, highlighted by Aliazer Alicea (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) and Joey Ortega (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) claiming the top two spots in the 149-pound weight class, respectively. Nic Allison (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) had four falls in his top finish at 125 pounds, while Javien DeLeon (Allentown, Pa./Liberty) claimed the 133-pound crown by winning with no less than a major decision in each of his five bouts.

Sixth-ranked 174-pound grappler Dalton Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) used a pair of technical falls to win his weight class, while eighth-ranked 197-pound Wayne McIntyre (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) was on the mat for a combined 2:37 across his three competitive bouts, all of which ended in pins in his first-place Saturday performance.

Ortega was the lone second-place finisher, and rookie grappler Tom Grimley (Marmora, N.J./Ocean City) followed closely behind Gimbor, finishing third in his debut outing. Graduate student Alex Ward (Manassas, Va./Battlefield) took fifth at 184, and freshman Remy Trach (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) finished sixth to give KU a trio of weight classes with multiple podium finishes.

As a team, the Golden Bears' 241.5 points led second-place Gettysburg (209.5) by a 32-point margin. Third place Alvernia (164.5), fourth place Shippensburg (157.5) and fifth place Albright (155) rounded out the top of the tournament.

The Golden Bears look ahead to the "Shorty" Hitchcock Classic, hosted by Millersville University, on Saturday, Nov. 15, beginning at 10 a.m. inside the Student Memorial Center. The season's first dual competition will take place in the home opener on Friday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m. against Seton Hill inside Keystone Arena.
