Kutztown gets back on track with sweep over Bloomsburg

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – It was a sweet night on Halloween inside Keystone Arena as Kutztown women's volleyball not only gave out candy to fans in the stands, but also gave the crowd a great performance on the court as KU took down Bloomsburg in straight sets Friday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division matchup.

The victory snapped a three-match losing streak for the Golden Bears (11-12 overall, 3-6 PSAC East). Scores of the match were 25-18, 25-20, 25-14.

Both Paige Skinner (Placerville, Calif./Ponderosa) and Madilyn Bogovic (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) continued their tear at the net, leading the Maroon and Gold attack with 13 kills each. Skinner also had three digs and two service aces, while Bogovic added four digs. Grace White (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakertown) finished with six kills and two blocks. Lauren Montgomery (Norristown, Pa./Mount Saint Joseph Academy) tallied five kills and two blocks. Emma Baldridge (Damascus, Md./Damascus), who was recognized prior to the match for eclipsing 1,000 career assists last week, recorded 33 assists and six digs. Saige Thibodeaux (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida S. Baker) had team-highs in digs (18) and aces (4).

The Huskies (8-15, 0-9) have had a tough go of it against the Golden Bears, losing all six sets in the two matches this season. In the latest matchup, KU did a good job of never allowing BU to be in the either of the sets, primarily holding the lead and of multiple points.

In the opening set, Kutztown scored the first two points and six of the first eight, before going on top 11-3. The Maroon and Gold opened set two on a 5-0 run and never allowed the Huskies within three points the rest of the way. In the third set, Bloomsburg took its first lead of the night, but it was only as much as 3-1, and then KU answered with five straight points to go ahead 6-3. BU hung around and found another brief lead of 10-9, but Kutztown would score five of the next six points and finished off the sweep.

Kutztown is back in action in PSAC East play tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 1, when it hosts Lock Haven at 4 p.m. The Golden Bears will look for some revenge after the Bald Eagles beat them in four sets back on Oct. 18.
