LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- Kutztown University women's basketball picked up two weekly awards from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, Tuesday, as
Naia Pulliam (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) was named Eastern Division Athlete of the Week and
Olivia Smelas (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Jim Thorpe) was tabbed Eastern Division Defensive Athlete of the Week.
The duo helped the Golden Bears to a 3-0 week with home victories over Mansfield, Bloomsburg and Millersville. At 5-6 in the division, KU sits one victory back of co-leaders Lock Haven and Millersville (6-4).
Pulliam averaged 21.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 3.0 blocks per game for the week. The senior guard from Wilmington, Del., ranks fifth in the PSAC in scoring at 16.8 ppg and is fifth in field goal percentage at .523. Pulliam finished with 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting, five rebounds, three assists and a career-high five steals as the Maroon and Gold topped Mansfield 75-62 last Monday. In a victory over Bloomsburg two nights later, she tallied 27 points while going 10-for-17 from the floor, including 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Pulliam added 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Pulliam put an exclamation point on her outstanding week with 15 points, four rebounds, three assists, three steals and one block in a convincing 69-49 victory over first-place Millersville on Saturday.
Smelas averaged just over nine points, 10 rebounds, three steals and two assists per game. The junior forward was near double figures in rebounding in all three games and had at least two steals each game. Smelas contributed five points, eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals in KU's win over Mansfield. When the Bears took down Bloomsburg, Wednesday, Smelas recorded 10 points, nine rebounds and a season-best four steals. In a win over first-place Millersville this past Saturday, the Jim Thorpe, Pa., native tallied her first double-double of the year with 13 points and 13 rebounds. She also chipped in two steals and two assists.
Kutztown is on the road for a pair of games this week, traveling west to face Clarion in a non-conference game Wednesday night before heading down to Shepherd to resume PSAC East play on Saturday.
