KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's basketball team was overwhelmed by the Millersville Marauders 93-78 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game at Keystone Arena on Saturday evening.
It was a back-and-forth outing for the Golden Bears (6-11, 3-8 PSAC) thanks to 27 points from guard Jalen Bryant (Edgewood, Md./John Carroll), but the Marauders (10-7, 6-5 PSAC) kicked their offense into another gear in the second half to secure their 10th win of the season in a high scoring road affair.
The opposing offense received double-digit scoring contributions from all five starters, while their aggressive attack pushed the Golden Bears to the limit before Millersville took the lead for good early in the second frame.
Transfer junior Jordan Nkoa Abessolo (Yaoundé, Cameroon/St. Maria Goretti (Md.)) faced his former squad for the first time, tallying 16 points and six rebounds in 27 minutes of play. He served as a roadblock for Millersville big man Drew Stover, who, despite having an impact throughout the game, ended up fouling out late in the second period. Forward Amir Cunningham (Middletown, Del./Middletown) had a big game in the paint, securing a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double, his first such feat of the season.
KU led the game in free throw percentage (15-for-20) while holding a slight advantage in three-point shooting (7-for-16). They received a larger contribution from their bench players (16 points to Millersville's 8), with Juju Pagan (Tobyhanna, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) and Brent Ricketts Jr. (Seaford, Del./Seaford) making those contributions in under 20 minutes of work.
The Golden Bears wrap up their four-game homestand with their final non-conference game against Cheyney on Wednesday, Jan. 22, at 7 p.m.
