Cunningham’s career-high pushes Kutztown past Huskies in overtime

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Sophomore forward Amir Cunningham (Middletown, Del./Middletown) put on a show Wednesday night, scoring a career-high 33 points to go along with seven rebounds in an 89-87 overtime victory over the Bloomsburg Huskies at Keystone Arena in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference showdown.

The Middletown, Del., native turned in an efficient individual performance for the Golden Bears (6-10, 3-7 PSAC), scoring 11-of-13 field goal attempts while hitting on a pair of three-point shots and missing just one free throw attempt. His outing overshadowed a strong attack from the Huskies (3-13, 2-7 PSAC), who fell despite holding momentum from a seven-point win a week ago.

Cunningham's efforts were complimented by 16-point outings from Jalen Bryant (Edgewood, Md./John Carroll) and Jordan Nkoa Abessolo (Yaoundé, Cameroon/St. Maria Goretti (Md.)), as well as a 13-point, four-assist night from guard Jaiden McGhee (Townsend, Del./Middletown). Nkoa Abessolo led the team with 10 rebounds to turn in his fourth double-double of the season.

After a one-point deficit in the first frame, the Maroon and Gold returned to the court with a more efficient attack, one that featured less three-point shooting but a better shot selection. Their 48.5 percent mark from the field in the second frame and 91 percent free throw clip helped them come back late, and they took advantage of an overly aggressive Husky attack to find their way to the charity stripe and claim their second win in as many games.

The Golden Bears led the way in bench points, 39-30, while controlling the paint scoring (48-38) and taking advantage of second-chance opportunities (26-12). The lead changed 12 times between the two teams, but Bloomsburg never held the lead in the extra period.

Kutztown looks to make it three wins in a row when they return to Keystone Arena to face Millersville on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 3 p.m.
