Kutztown back on track with double digit win over Mansfield

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Playing in front of its home crowd for the first time in the new calendar year, Kutztown women's basketball did not disappoint and bounced back after a tough week last week in taking down Mansfield 75-62 Monday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division game inside Keystone Arena that was a makeup date from last Monday's postponed game.

The Golden Bears (7-10 overall, 3-6 PSAC) erased a two-game losing streak in a big way as they never trailed throughout.

Leila Hurley (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Jim Thorpe) tied a career and season-high with 22 points and added four rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block. Naia Pulliam (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) tallied 20 points, five rebounds, five steals and three assists. The duo each played 38 of a possible 40 minutes. Bella Quinn (Ashland, Ky./Russell) also finished in double figures in scoring with 10 points.

Kutztown came out and controlled the game, taking a 20-11 lead after the first quarter. KU's biggest advantage was 10 (18-8) with just over a minute left. Mansfield mounted a comeback in the second quarter and turned a 10-point deficit (21-11) into a tie scoring 10 in-a-row. The Maroon and Gold were held to just three field goals in the quarter, a jumper by Abbey Hearn (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) and back-to-back 3-pointers by Hearn and Hurley. The first field goal didn't come until there was 2:19 left.

The Golden Bears responded with their strongest quarter of the game, outscoring the Mounties 27-18 to go on top 56-45 heading to the fourth. Mansfield attempted another comeback effort in the final frame, but could not get any closer than seven, which it pulled within three different times.

Hearn just missed double digits with nine points and added five rebounds and two assists. Olivia Smelas (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Jim Thorpe) had five points and eight rebounds.

This is the first of three games in a busy week as Kutztown next plays on Wednesday night as it welcomes Bloomsburg to Keystone Arena for a 5:30 p.m., PSAC East game.
