HAMPTON, Va. – The 18th-ranked Kutztown University wrestling team made quick work of the Apprentice School Builders at the Virginia Duals on Friday, turning in a resounding 35-15 performance inside the Hampton Coliseum on the first day of competition.
After a bye round in the earlier set of duals, the Golden Bears (4-0, 1-0 PSAC) returned from break with a victory over the Builders (8-3 overall), a Virginia-based school from the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) in seven of the 10 weight classes, headlined by first period pins from both 10th-ranked 174 pound Dalton Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) and 197-pound grappler Wayne McIntyre (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg North).
Kutztown opened scoring with a 7-4 decision by 133-pound Andreo Ferraina (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth), who claimed his first dual victory of the season. 14th-ranked 149-pound grappler Jimmy Ryan (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) and Aliazer Alicea (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) blanked their opponents in 15-0 technical fall victories to claim five team points apiece.
12th-ranked Bailey Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) kept his spotless dual season at 165 pounds with a third technical fall, winning his contest 16-0. Second-ranked Matthew Weinberg (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) continued his flawless season with a 15-0 win in the 184-pound class, while McIntyre's pin wrapped up scoring for the Golden Bears on the opening day.
While Kutztown was slated to face a pair of opponents on Friday, St. Andrews (N.C.), Kutztown's opening-round opponent, could not make the trip up to Hampton due to Winter Storm Cora.
The second day of competition at the Virginia Duals opens against Reinhardt on Saturday at a time to be determined. The winner of that semifinal contest advances to the championship round later that day, while the loser battles for third place to wrap up the weekend.
