KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The top-ranked Kutztown University field hockey team opened its season with a statement win, defeating No. 5 Saint Anselm 4-0 in non-conference action Thursday afternoon at Andre Reed Stadium.
Senior Greenleigh McGehee (New Tripoli, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) got the Golden Bears on the board early, scoring just 9:09 into the first quarter. Grace Harrold (York, Pa./Central York) provided the assist with a pass from the left side that McGehee deflected into the net for her first goal of the season.
Kutztown (1-0) extended its lead at 21:29 in the second quarter when senior Jessica Traynor (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) found the back of the net off a cross pass from Juliana Donato (Cedarville, N.J./Schalick). Donato's pass from the right side connected with Traynor, who finished at the left post for her first goal of the year.
The Golden Bears continued their dominance in the second half, adding two more goals in the fourth quarter. Traynor notched her second goal of the game at the 46:36 mark, capitalizing on a ball played in from McGehee. Graduate forward Mia Simpson (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette), a transfer from Lindenwood University, sealed the victory at 50:20, carrying the ball in from the left and scoring to the right corner for her first goal of the season, and as a Golden Bear.
Kutztown's defense was impenetrable, allowing just one shot on goal in the entire game, while the Golden Bears fired off 19 shots of their own, securing the team's first shutout of the season.
Kutztown will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 11:00 a.m., when they face Saint Michael's in the Best Western Windjammer Fall Classic.
