FROSTBURG, Md. – The Kutztown University women's volleyball team dropped their opening match in the Frostburg State Tournament to the host team on Thursday night, falling in straight sets in the first of their four matches at Bobcat Arena.
The Golden Bears (0-8) struggled against a tough Bobcats squad throughout the night, as Frostburg State (4-3) seemed to carry the rhythm throughout the match.
Kutztown caught some luck late in the first set with three consecutive attack errors from the Bobcats, but a service error enabled the home team to finish the job in the opening set. The Golden Bears had their best showing in the second set, where they took a 5-1 advantage before the Bobcats took over with a flurry of attack errors to claim the second set. Set three wasn't much better, with Kutztown coming as close as one point from a tie early before Frostburg State used another strong surge to claim the match in straight sets.
Kutztown saw action from several first-year players today, as Bryanna Carter (Abingdon, Md./Edgewood) recorded four kills and Christina Lockett (Gaithersburg, Md./Tuscarora) added three kills and a block. Sophomore Sarah Hess (Landsville, Pa./Hempfield) tallied three blocks in the losing effort.
The Golden Bears are competing in three matches over the next two days, as they are set to face Indianapolis (Friday, 3 p.m.), Goldey-Beacom (Saturday, 10 a.m.) and Edinboro (Saturday, 2 p.m.) at the Frostburg State Tournament in Frostburg, Md.
