FROSTBURG, Md. – The Kutztown University women's volleyball team fell in their second of four weekend matches on Friday afternoon, as Indianapolis picked up a 3-0 advantage to take their first match of the weekend at the Frostburg State Tournament at Bobcat Arena.
The Golden Bears (0-9) couldn't find a rhythm for the second straight day, as they faced another tough test against a dominant Indianapolis (7-2) squad.
Kutztown held an early 6-3 advantage in the first set, led by a pair of kills from freshman Madison Lowe (Kearneysville, W. Va./Jefferson). The Greyhounds surged ahead with a 22-7 run, handily taking the first set of the match.
The second set was all Indianapolis, with the momentum staying on the Greyhound's side in a 25-10 decision. Freshman Macy Shewmake (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) recorded a pair of kills to try and get momentum back to the Golden Bears, but another late charge gave Indianapolis a 2-0 lead.
Kutztown found their best luck in the third and final set of the afternoon, as they were able to stay within striking distance of the Greyhounds for most of the set. Shewmake and Lowe, along with freshman Bryanna Carter (Abingdon, Md./Edgewood) and sophomore Sarah Hess (Landsville, Pa./Hempfield), each recorded a pair of kills in the final frame, but the momentum remained with Indianapolis as they claimed the match with a 25-16 final tally.
The Golden Bears will close out the Frostburg State Tournament with a pair of matches tomorrow against Goldey-Beacom (10 a.m.) and Edinboro (2 p.m.).
