KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Sophomore defender
Maura Day (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Abington) netted her first career goal as No. 8 Kutztown and No. 21 East Stroudsburg settled for a 1-1 tie in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division matchup of top 25 teams Wednesday night at Keystone Field.
The Golden Bears (4-0-1 overall, 2-0-1 PSAC East) and Warriors (3-0-1, 2-0-1) remain two of just three teams in the East that are still unbeaten.
In the 14th minute, Day received a pass from
Chelsea Ritter (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) towards the end line in the offensive third, volleyed the ball over her defender and onto her path towards net. She dribbled about 5-10 yards while shielding another defender and then found some space and lobbed a shot with inside of her left foot that cleared the outstretched arms of Emmy Clarkson and into the top right corner of the net to give her team a 1-0 lead.
The teams went into halftime with the score still 1-0 in favor of the Maroon and Gold.
Nearly 13 minutes into the second half, however, ESU got on the scoreboard thanks to a goal from McKenna Chisholm.
Ritter, Day,
Corinne Morgan (Port Republic, N.J./Cedar Creek) and
Katelyn Economopoulos (Grantville, Pa./Lower Dauphin) all recorded shots in the final 32:03, but neither threatened goal. KU also had five corner kicks in that time frame, but was unable to convert either into a goal.
Kutztown finished with 16 shots overall and six on goal, compared to eight for East Stroudsburg and two on frame. KU had a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Cassidy Howes (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) made one save in net for the Golden Bears.
Kutztown will travel to Shippensburg to take on the Raiders this Saturday, Sept. 21, at 4 p.m.
