Golden Bears drop doubleheader against No. 25 East Stroudsburg at Coca-Cola Park

ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- For the first time in program history, the Kutztown University baseball team (16-32, 9-21 PSAC East) took the field at Coca-Cola Park, home of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, for a PSAC East doubleheader against rivals No. 25 East Stroudsburg (37-9, 25-5 PSAC East) on a beautiful Thursday in Allentown.

The Golden Bears played the Warriors tight in both games, but the Warriors' offense woke up late in both contests as ESU swept the doubleheader. Jimmy Kerley (Indian Trail, N.C./Sun Valley) led the way with two hits, three RBI, and a home run in a 13-5 game one loss. Ethan Martini (Trevose, Pa./Father Judge) and Brennan Rozich (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) had multi-hit games, while Antonio Rossillo (Warrington, Pa./Archbishop Wood) homered in a 9-5 game two loss.

KU wraps up the 2024 season tomorrow, Friday, May 3 at Creekview Park against ESU. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.

Game One: East Stroudsburg 13, Kutztown 5
The Warriors racked up 19 hits and used a six-run sixth inning to take game one 13-5.

After ESU took a 4-0 lead after two innings, Rossillo knocked home KU's first run of the day via an RBI double. Joey Pettinelli (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) hit a sacrifice fly the next at-bat to score Cole Regn (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) to make it 4-2 after two. ESU responded with two runs in the top of the third, but Kerley launched a homer to left field in the bottom of the third to make it 6-4.

In the bottom of the fifth, Kerley knocked home another KU run with an RBI single to make it 6-5. The Warrior offense found its groove in the top of the sixth, scoring six runs on six hits to open up a 12-5 lead. ESU tacked on one more run in the top of the seventh to walk away 13-5 winners.

Jake Skrocki (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) got the start for KU and went 5.2 innings in his final performance in the Maroon & Gold. Abel Saft (Kintnersville, Pa./Moravian Academy) and Trevor Leverington (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) saw action in relief. Brent Franciso earned his tenth win of the season for ESU.

Game Two: East Stroudsburg 9, Kutztown 5
The Golden Bear offense struggled in game two, but a late seventh-inning rally made things more interesting in a 9-5 game two loss.

After ESU opened the scoring in the top of the second, Rossillo flew a ball over the tall wall in right field to cut the lead to 2-1. The Warriors added a run a piece in the top of the third and fourth innings, before putting up a five spot in the seventh to open up a 9-1 lead.

The Golden Bears got two runners on by hit-by-pitches to start the seventh, followed by a Rozich RBI single that made it 9-2. Pettinelli hit his second sac fly of the day to make it 9-3 before Martini knocked home another two runs to cut the lead to 9-5 before Jaden Newton secured the win for ESU.

Paul Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) got the start for KU and allowed three earned runs in six innings of work. Tyler Cleveland (Pillow, Pa./Upper Dauphin) saw action in relief. Ryan Dewees earned the win for East Stroudsburg.
