TOWSON, Md. -- The Kutztown University men's tennis team won twice in doubles and took five-of-six singles flights to capture a 7-2 victory over NCAA Division III Goucher on Wednesday afternoon.
Because the Gophers hosted the match, it was played using Division III scoring rules, which award a point for each match. Kutztown's regular Division II scoring format awards only a single team point for the team winning 2-of-3 doubles matches.
The Golden Bears (4-5) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on the strength of an 8-3 win from
Justin Gincauskas (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthra Park Secondary) and
Sebastian Arizpe (Puebla, Mexico/Colegio Humboldt de Puebla) over George King and Ethan Katz at third doubles, and an 8-6 win from its top flight team of
Gonzalo Barcelo (San Pedro, Argentina/Nuestra Senora del Socorro) and
Joaquin Perez (Pachuca, Mexico/Escuela Americana) over Gabe Naftoly and Calis Nguyen.
Goucher (7-8) won second doubles by an 8-5 count but the Bears took care of business in singles.
Perez topped Angel Cerpa 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 and
Neal Devkaran (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI Catholic) defeated Manny Vidal 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6 to put KU on the brink of clinching the match.
Dang Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam) guaranteed the outcome in favor of the Maroon and Gold with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Naftoly at No. 2.
No. 4
Emmitt Robinson (Ingersoll, Ontario/Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute) rallied from a set down to beat Calis Nguyen 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 and Barcelo earned a hard-fought victory over Unai Laguardia Alvarez at No. 1, 7-6 (5), 6-4.
Kutztown is set for another non-conference match, Saturday, when it travels to the District of Columbia. Match time is 1 p.m.
