KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- The Kutztown University baseball team (9-19, 3-9 PSAC East) dropped both games of a doubleheader to Bloomsburg (9-16, 6-10 PSAC East) Saturday afternoon at North Campus Field.
The Golden Bears led in game one, but ultimately allowed seven runs across the final four innings in a 9-4 loss. Bloomsburg jumped out to a 5-0 lead after one in game two and held off Kutztown for a 6-1 win. The Huskies take the series after the two teams split a doubleheader on Friday.
KU is back in action in non-conference play on Tuesday, April 2 as the Golden Bears make the trip to Wilmington for a single nine-inning contest starting at 3 p.m. KU is back to PSAC East play next weekend with a series against Lock Haven.
Game 1: Bloomsburg 9, Kutztown 4
The Golden Bears led after three innings thanks to a three-run home run from Jimmy Kerley (Indian Trail, N.C./Sun Valley), but Bloomsburg plated multiple runs in the fourth and seventh innings to walk away 9-4 winners.
Like games one and two in the series, Bloomsburg started fast with two runs in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead. That's when Kerley responded, launching a moon shot over the left field fence at North Campus Field to give the Golden Bears the 3-2 lead after three. It was Kerley's team-leading fourth home run of the season, which is tied for the fifth-most in the PSAC this season.
Bloomsburg quickly took back the lead in the top of the fourth with back-to-back RBI singles. KU committed four errors in the top of the sixth, which allowed the Huskies to plate another run and extend the lead to 5-3. Four more insurance runs came in the top of the seventh to extend the advantage to 9-3. Antonio Rossillo (Warrington, Pa./Archbishop Wood) hit an RBI single in the bottom half of the frame to cut into the lead, but it wasn't enough as Bloomsburg won 9-4.
Along with the RBI, Rossillo recorded two hits. Kerley ended with three RBI, two runs, and a hit. Bo Barthol (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland), Colin Kelly (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge), and Brennan Rozich (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) were the other Golden Bears to record a hit in game one. Andrew Armstrong earned the win for Bloomsburg, while Zach Male (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) took the loss for KU.
Game 2: Bloomsburg 6, Kutztown 1
The Huskies racked up five runs in the first inning and didn't look back, holding off KU for a 6-1 win in game two.
Bloomsburg started things off with a two-run homer three batters into the game, followed up by two RBI singles and an RBI double to lead 5-0 after one. A Barthol RBI single in the fifth cut the lead to 5-1, but the Huskies added one more run in the top of the sixth to walk away 6-1 winners.
Barthol had two hits to go along with the RBI in game two. Colin Kelly (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) also had a multi-hit game, while Cole Regn (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) had KU's other hit. Will Dean earned the win for Bloomsburg, while Trevor Leverington (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) took the loss for KU.Â
