KUTZTOWN, Pa.-- Matthew Weinberg (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) claimed the regional title at 184 lbs., while
Dalton Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg),
Bailey Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg), and
Wayne McIntyre (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) all punched their ticket to nationals as the Kutztown University wrestling team finished third at the NCAA Super Region I Championships hosted at Keystone Arena on Saturday.
Weinberg tore through the 184 lbs. bracket, starting things off with a 15-0 tech fall over Brendan Finnerty of Seton Hill before pinning Nick McCarthy of Frostburg State in 1:35 in the quarterfinal. The Philadelphia native matched up against Noah Gnibus of Pitt-Johnstown in the semifinal and registered his second tech fall of the day, winning 18-2 in 6:02. In the final, Weinberg faced Cole Casillo of Gannon and used a takedown and an escape to earn a 4-2 decision and the Super Region I title.
It's the second career regional championship for the redshirt junior, with the other one coming two years ago. It's the third regional title at 184 for KU since joining Super Region I in 2011, with the other title coming from Jeff Reimel in 2018. Weinberg will be one of the favorites for the national title going into the championships after earning All-American status last season.
Dalton Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) had similar success in the 165 lbs. bracket. A 17-2 tech fall over Alfred MacNeill of AIC, followed by two major decisions in the quarter and semifinals saw Gimbor cruise into the final. In the final he faced stiff competition, falling in an 8-2 decision to Nicholas Coreno of Gannon to finish second in the 165 lbs. weight class. It's the second straight trip to the national tournament for Gimbor after he won a pair of matches last season.
Dalton's brother Bailey Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) completed his comeback story, punching his ticket to his first national tournament with a third-place finish at 157. Gimbor started strong with a pin and a tech fall but was stood up by Ethan Richner of Gannon in the semifinal via a 12-3 major decision. The Bernville native emphatically bounced back, earning a 16-1 tech fall over Kolton Parsons of Fairmount State to find himself in the third-place match. Gimbor's dominance continued, cruising to a 19-5 major decision over Max Stedeford of Mercyhurst to claim third.
Arguably the coolest story of the day came from McIntyre at 197 for KU. The redshirt freshman entered the day having only wrestled eight matches in his college career with a 4-4 record. The day didn't start on the right foot, with McIntyre falling to Trevor Begin of Mercyhust 11-4 in the first round. The East Stroudsburg native responded in a big way, wrestling all the way back to the third-place match after earning two pins and a major decision in the consolation bracket. Then in the third-place match, McIntyre got Bruce Vaughan of Millersville on his back and earned his third pin of the day to punch his ticket to Kansas.
KU got big points from the lightweight part of its lineup, with Nic Allison (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) (125), Javien DeLeon (Allentown, Pa./Liberty) (133), and Aliazer Alicea (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) (149) all finishing fifth in their respective weight classes. Dustin Swanson (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) also had a solid showing at 285, pinning both Connor Livingston of Shippensburg and Avery Kuhns of Millersville. In the consolation semifinal, Swanson fell to Gavin Bage of Frostburg State 6-1 and had to medically forfeit the 5th-place match after losing a tooth against Bage.
The four Golden Bears heading to the NCAA DII National Championships tie the most the program has sent since joining Super Region I in 2011, with the other times coming in 2015, 2019, and 2022. KU finished 113.5 points, improving one spot as a team after finishing fourth in the Super Region last season. Gannon edged out Pitt-Johnstown 145-144.5 to win the team title, with the championship at 285 deciding it all.
Weinberg, the Gimbors, and McIntyre will make the trip to Park City, Kan. on March 15-16 to compete in the NCAA DII Championships at Hartman Arena.
