KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Bailey Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg),
Dalton Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg),
Wayne McIntyre (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) and
Matthew Weinberg (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) of the 18th-ranked Kutztown University wrestling team are headed to Park City, Kan., for the 2024 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships where they'll attempt to win national championships and capture All-America honors this Friday and Saturday inside Hartman Arena.
Â
It marks the second time in the last three seasons that the Golden Bears have qualified four wrestlers for nationals.
Â
Leading the KU contingent is returning All-American
Matthew Weinberg (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) at 184 pounds. The redshirt junior from Philadelphia is making his third national appearance in as many seasons and is coming off a fourth-place finish at the 2023 NCAA DII Championships.
Â
Weinberg, who is ranked third in the NWCA's pre-tournament rankings and seeded third in the 184 bracket, is 24-3 on the season and holds a share of the team lead with eight pins. Weinberg is also 4-0 against nationally ranked opponents during the 2023-24 campaign. He enters the national tournament on a 13-match winning streak, capped by his second Super Region 1 title in three years two weekends ago in Kutztown's Keystone Arena.
Â
Weinberg's opening opponent will be Owen Butler (26-14) of Indianapolis. He will be looking to advance out of the bottom half of the bracket, which also includes second-seeded Daniel Beemer (Ashland), sixth-seeded Bryce Fitzpatrick (St. Cloud State) and seventh-seeded Damon Ashworth (Central Missouri). Ty McGeary of West Liberty is the top seed and No. 1 ranked wrestler at 184.
Â
Returning to the national tournament for the second year in a row is redshirt sophomore
Dalton Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) at 165 pounds. The native of Bernville, Pa., has racked up 27 victories in 33 matches for an .818 winning percentage. Ranked for most of the season, Gimbor enters the tournament at No. 6 in the NWCA Poll and seeded sixth in the bracket.
Â
Gimbor is coming off a runner-up finish at the Super Region 1 Championships and has defeated five nationally ranked opponents this season, most of any Golden Bear. He owns a share of the team lead in pins (eight) and paces the Maroon and Gold with seven technical falls. Gimbor won a pair of matches in his nationals debut last March before falling one win shy of All-America status, a leap he surely hopes to make this weekend.
Â
Gimbor will battle 10th-ranked Sevriano Garza of Ashland is his first round match. He is also positioned in the bottom of his bracket along with second-seeded Chase Luensman of Upper Iowa, third-seeded Cory Peterson of McKendree and seventh-seeded Anthony Herrera of St. Cloud State.
Â
Dalton's twin brother,
Bailey Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg), will make the trip to Park City, Kan., for his first taste of nationals after securing a third-place finish in the 157-pound bracket at the SR1 Championships.
Â
Bailey was having an outstanding 2022-23 season when an injury forced him to miss nearly the entire second half of Kutztown's season. He returned for super regionals and came within one point of punching his ticket to the NCAA Championships as a redshirt freshman.
Â
Gimbor has wrestled hungry this season, posting a 19-3 record that includes five major decisions, six technical falls and a pair of tournament victories. The redshirt sophomore form Bernville, Pa., held firm at 12th in the NWCA Poll from late January through super regionals.
Â
Bailey drew a preliminary round match against ninth-ranked Ryan Wilson of Western Colorado. The winner will advance to face eighth-seeded Keegan Roberson of UNC Pembroke in the first round.
Â
Rounding out Kutztown's entries at this year's NCAA Championships is 197-pound redshirt freshman
Wayne McIntyre (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg North). McIntyre was a surprise qualifier, not on his talent level, but in the manner which he secured his spot.
Â
The East Stroudsburg, Pa., native spent the first half of the season at heavyweight, competing in a pair of tournaments and a PSAC dual at Shippensburg. He hadn't wrestled since Dec. 6, but dropped down to serve as KU's 197-pound entry at super regionals. After falling to Mercyhurst's Trever Begin in the first round, McIntyre rallied through the consolation bracket with three pins and a major decision. His 4:06 pin of Millersville's Bruce Vaughan in the consolation final clinched the coveted third and final national qualifying spot in the weight class.
Â
McIntyre is 8-5 on the season with five of those victories coming via pin. During his redshirt season of 2022-23, he won the 197-pound title at the ESU Open.
Â
McIntyre is in one of his bracket's two preliminary round matches, where he'll take on West Liberty's Mason Christian in the upper half of the bracket. Awaiting the victor is eighth-seeded Jackson Kinsella of Nebraska-Kearney.
Â
Wrestling gets underway at 11 a.m. ET Friday with preliminary and first round matches. Quarterfinals and first-and-second round consolation matches are slated to begin at 6 p.m. ET Friday.
Â
Action will continue Saturday, with semifinals and additional consolation matches beginning at 11 a.m. ET. The championship finals are slated for 8 p.m. ET.
