Kutztown drops both at Barry Wednesday

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – For the first time during this week of games down south, the Kutztown softball team was unable to record a victory in a double header at a Florida school as KU was downed by Barry 1-0 in eight innings in the opener and 9-3 in the nightcap Wednesday in Miami Shores, Fla.

The Golden Bears (12-5 overall) finished up day three of a four-day stretch of eight games in the sunshine state on their spring break trip. Prior to Wednesday, the Maroon and Gold were 3-1, splitting two games at Palm Beach Atlantic Monday night and sweeping Lynn Tuesday afternoon.

KU outhit Barry 5-2 in game one, but the Buccaneers final hit was an all-important one, a run-scoring single in the bottom of the eighth inning for the only run of the game and a walk-off victory. Barry reached double figures in hits in game two and doubled up Kutztown 10-5.

Emily Henn (Matamoras, Pa./Delaware Valley) finished with three hits, including a triple, scored two runs and added an RBI on the day. Brianna Stocklin (Deptford, N.J./Deptford Township) tallied two hits and Sophia Collins (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn), Alexa Stevens (Covington Township, Pa./North Pocono), Hannah Reimel (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent), Sarah Harvat (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) and Morgan Slomkowski (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) all had one hit, with Slomkowski and Stevens contributing an RBI each.

Haley Gravish (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg) started inside the circle in game one and threw a gem, outside of one-half inning. Gravish gave up a single in the bottom of the first inning, which was the only other hit outside of the game-winner in the eighth.

Kutztown concludes its spring break trip with two games at Nova Southeastern tomorrow, Thursday, March 14, beginning at noon. The Sharks were previously nationally ranked as of last week.
