Burns’ walk-off caps off doubleheader split against Frostburg State

CARY, N.C. -- Michael Burns (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) capped off the Golden Bears' North Carolina trip with a walk-off winner as the Kutztown University baseball team (3-4) split a doubleheader against Frostburg State (3-4) Sunday at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, N.C.

It was all Bobcats in game one, racking up 13 hits in what was a 10-3 loss for KU. Game two was a much closer affair, with Frostburg State tying things up in the top of the seventh and final inning before Burns walked it off for the 3-2 win.

The Golden Bears have one more trip south before starting conference play on March 8. KU heads down to West Virginia to take on Salem in a four-game series on March 2 and 3. Game one on Saturday, March 2, will start at noon.

Game One
Frostburg State jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first four innings and didn't look back, winning 10-3 in game one of the day.

Brian Finn (Warrington, Pa./Springside Chestnut Hill Academy) got the Golden Bears on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-1. The Bobcats added another run in the fifth, but back-to-back wild pitches scored Finn and Ethan Martini (Trevose, Pa./Father Judge) to make it 6-3 and make things interesting in the top of the seventh. The Bobcats squashed any hope of a comeback in the top of the ninth, plating four runs on four hits to make it 10-3.

Martini and Burns both ended with two hits, while Antonio Rossillo (Warrington, Pa./Archbishop Wood) had one. Paul Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) got the start for KU, allowing five earned runs on eight hits. Freshman Kannon Zdimal (Morgantown, Pa./Twin Valley) saw extended time in the game, recording his first collegiate strikeout. Max Proctor recorded the victory for Frostburg State.

Game Two
Game two was a much closer affair, with both teams struggling to find offense in what was a 3-2 KU victory in seven innings.

The Bobcats got the scoring going in the top of the third via an Ethan Kiple single to make it 1-0. KU responded an inning later, plating two runs thanks to RBI singles from Burns and Joey Pettinelli (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) to make it 2-1.

Things were looking good for KU entering the final frame. The Golden Bears recorded the first two outs, but pinch hitter Cy Probst knocked home the tying run to tie the game at two. Rossillo started the bottom of the inning with a single and was replaced by Zach Tropiano (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) as a pinch runner. A Jason Wolff (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) single advanced Tropiano to third, then Burns hit a fly ball into right field, which scored Tropiano to win the game.

Wolff had two hits in the game, while Bo Barthol (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland), Rossillo, Burns, Cole Regn (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional), and Pettinelli had one each. Burns had two RBI, while Pettinelli had the other. Trevor Leverington (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) earned his first win of the season for KU, allowing only one run on five hits while striking out two. Kiple took the loss for Frostburg State.
