Bryant scores 1,000th career point in Saturday night loss to Griffins

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Senior guard Jalen Bryant (Edgewood, Md./John Carroll) reached the 1,000 career point threshold in the first half of an 85-80 loss against the visiting Seton Hill Griffins in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon inside Keystone Arena.

Bryant and Jaiden McGhee (Townsend, Del./Middletown) were once again the offensive focus for the Golden Bears (3-6, 0-3 PSAC), as the guard tandem each scored 23 points on the night. However, the Griffins' (9-2, 2-2 PSAC) defense managed to read Kutztown's gameplan and snuff out any further offensive damage to record their fourth consecutive win.

The game remained close at halftime, as the Griffins led by a point after McGhee responded to a Seton Hill three-point basket with a buzzer-beating triple of his own, one of 16 first-half points from the sophomore guard.

Seton Hall used most of the second period to create a 13-point advantage that stood until four minutes to play, as Kutztown clawed back but fell short in the end.

Both teams hit 28 field goals on the night, but the Griffins' three-point marksmanship (10-for-23, 43.5 percent) put them over the top. They added 19 free throws on a 95 percent clip in their winning effort.

On top of Bryant's milestone early in the game, he played all 40 minutes and added four rebounds and a pair of steals while going 11-for-12 from the charity stripe.

Kutztown outrebounded the Griffins with 31 boards, led by big men Tyler Koenig (Waldwick, N.J./Pioneer Academy) and Jordan Nkoa Abessolo (Yaoundé, Cameroon/St. Maria Goretti (Md.)), who pulled down eight and seven rebounds, respectively. The Maroon and Gold led the way in bench scoring (13-9) while creating 10 points off turnovers and 13 second-chance points.

Kutztown takes next week off before traveling to Indiana (Pa.) to face the Crimson Hawks on Tuesday, Dec. 17 at 5 p.m. at the Kovalchick Convention & Athletic Complex. They return to Keystone Arena the following Saturday, Dec. 21, against the California (Pa.) Vulcans at 3 p.m.
