Weinberg earns conference Wrestling Athlete of the Week after perfect weekend

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Following a 184-pound title on a perfect weekend at the 45th Midwest Classic, redshirt senior Matthew Weinberg (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) of the 13th-ranked Kutztown University wrestling team was named the Wrestling Athlete of the Week by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference on Tuesday afternoon.

The Philadelphia native picked up his second weekly conference honor after going a perfect 6-0 for the Golden Bears (3-0, 1-0 PSAC) at the University of Indianapolis' two-day tournament. He used a pair of first-period pins and a technical fall to advance to the quarterfinal round of the 184-pound bracket.

The nation's second-ranked 184-pound grappler rode three top-15 victories to the championship, defeating No. 11 Kyle Homet of Glenville State and No. 5 Garrett Wells of Central Oklahoma by decision before recording an 8-0 major decision victory over No. 3 Reece Worachek of Wisconsin-Parkside to cap off his perfect weekend.

His 27.5 team points paced No. 13 Kutztown, who finished with 61 team points on the weekend, good for 16th place out of the 43-team field.

The Golden Bears open the new year at the Virginia Duals, taking place at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Va., on Friday, Jan. 10, and Saturday, Jan. 11, in another multi-team non-conference event.
