Weinberg claims 184-pound crown in packed Midwest Classic wrestling field

INDIANAPOLIS – Redshirt senior Matthew Weinberg (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) topped the 184-pound weight class on Sunday afternoon as the Kutztown University wrestling team wrapped up tournament competition at the 45th Midwest Classic, hosted by the University of Indianapolis.

The 13th-ranked Golden Bears (3-0, 1-0 PSAC) finished the outing tied for 16th out of the 43-team field with 61 team points, 27.5 of which came from Weinberg's performance on the weekend.

The Philadelphia native, who is ranked second in the 184-pound field, dominated his weight class at the two-day event, recording a pair of falls in the first two rounds and concluded the weekend with an 8-0 major decision over third-ranked Reece Worachek of Wisconsin-Parkside.

Jimmy Ryan (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) bounced back from a second-round defeat in the 149-pound consolation bracket, where the graduate transfer put together five straight wins before falling to No. 7 Wyatt Turnquist on Sunday.

Ninth-ranked Bailey Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) made noise with a pin and technical fall in the later rounds of the 165-pound consolation bracket but lost by decision to No. 8 Jack Haskin to wrap up his weekend. 174-pound Dalton Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) saw similar results in the consolation bracket, claiming a pin and technical fall before dropping a major decision to Lawson Losee in the sixth round.

Three other Kutztown grapplers made it to Sunday's competition, as 133-pound Javien DeLeon (Allentown, Pa./Liberty), 197-pound Wayne McIntyre (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) and 285-pound Liam Akers (Annandale, N.J./North Hunterdon) faced opponents in the fourth round of their respective consolation brackets.

The Golden Bears will roll out the mat at Keystone Arena this Thursday, Dec. 19, when they face Felician in a 7 p.m. nonconference dual in their final 2024 matchup of the season.
