SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Kutztown women's basketball was running with the nation's 10th ranked team for two-and-a-half quarters, but lost the energy late in falling to Fayetteville State Saturday evening, 61-37 at Shippensburg University's Heiges Field House.
It was the second game at the CIAA/PSAC Challenge for the Golden Bears (1-3 overall), who defeated Lincoln 71-61 on Friday afternoon.
The Broncos (2-0) scored the game's opening six points, but the Maroon and Gold stormed back with seven straight points, highlighted by 3-pointers by
Leila Hurley (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Jim Thorpe) and
Taylor Gurysh (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy), to take its first lead of the game at 7-6, 3:10 into the contest. A 3-pointer by
Shannon Remolde (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) 2:19 later pushed the advantage to 10-8 with 4:31 left in the opening quarter. But that would be the last lead of the game for KU as Fayetteville State went on top 15-13 after the first and then 25-20 at halftime.
The Broncos opened the third quarter with 12 straight points to go ahead 37-20 and never looked back the rest of the way.
Hurley led the KU lineup with seven points and three rebounds. Gurysh and
Olivia Smelas (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Jim Thorpe) both finished with six points and combined for six rebounds.
Anaya Price (Newark, Del./Caravel Academy) tallied five points and both Remolde and
Abbey Hearn (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) contributed four points, with the latter adding a team-high eight rebounds. Hearn was also selected to the All-Tournament team for the weekend.
After four straight games on the road to open up the 2024-25 regular season, Kutztown makes its home debut in its next game, as it welcomes Goldey-Beacom to Keystone Arena for a non-conference game next Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 5:30 p.m.
