INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Kutztown University women's soccer team was slotted as the fourth-best team in the latest NCAA Atlantic Region Rankings, as announced by the organization Wednesday afternoon.
The Golden Bears (9-2-6, 7-2-6 PSAC East) hold the second seed in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division standings ahead of tonight's regular season finale at East Stroudsburg. Not only has the team earned themselves a favorable position in the regional standings, but they look set to host postseason competition at Keystone Field in the coming weeks for the third consecutive season. KU seeks a return to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight season and the 13th time in program history.
Last season's historic run saw the Golden Bears advance to the second round of the NCAA DII Championship for the third time in as many seasons and the seventh time in program history, only to get tripped up by West Chester in a 1-0 game that saw the Golden Rams end Kutztown's season for the third consecutive year.
The PSAC put four teams in the top four slots of the Atlantic Region, including undefeated Gannon and one loss Shepherd and Indiana (Pa.) ahead of the Golden Bears. While Gannon and Indiana (Pa.) come from the PSAC West, Shepherd and Kutztown have met twice in the regular season, with the Rams holding an advantage featuring one win (2-1 at Shepherd) and one draw (1-1 at KU) in the regular season series. Charleston (W. Va.), who Kutztown defeated 2-0 at Keystone Field earlier in the year, holds the fifth spot in the region, followed by PSAC East rival Bloomsburg, Frostburg State, and more PSAC teams in East Stroudsburg and Slippery Rock.
The Golden Bears conclude their regular season with a Wednesday night game against the East Stroudsburg Warriors at Gregory-Douds Field at Eiler-Martin Stadium at 7 p.m. Kutztown is currently locked into a PSAC postseason berth, and hopes to gain an advantage as the higher-seeded team once everything is sorted out following the conclusion of regular season competition on Saturday, Nov. 9.
