SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. – The Kutztown University women's volleyball team fell in a three-set outing on Saturday night to the Shepherd Rams at the Butcher Athletic Center in a test against the last remaining undefeated team in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division play.
The Rams (19-4, 10-0 PSAC East) picked up their 11th consecutive win in a true team performance, with five players picking up at least seven kills on the night – a mark the Golden Bears (1-23, 0-10 PSAC East) struggled to compete with.
Shepherd paced the match for most of the night, as the scorching hot Rams were always one step ahead of the Golden Bears. The latest Kutztown led any set was a 10-9 mark in the opening frame, one which Kutztown fell 25-15. KU lost the middle set by a tally of 25-19 and ended the night with a 25-14 score in set three.
Sophomore Sarah Hess (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) continued her stellar individual season, recording 11 kills and a pair of block assists to lead the team in both points (13) and hit percentage (.348). Freshman Saige Thibodeaux (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida S. Baker) picked up nine digs and six assists, while Emma Baldridge (Damascus, Md./Damascus) led the way with ten assists in defeat. Bryanna Carter (Abingdon, Md./Edgewood) (4 kills) and Grace White (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) (2 kills) were the only other Golden Bears with positive hitting percentages.
With Gannon being upset by PSAC West Division foe Clarion in Saturday's conference slate, Shepherd is the only undefeated team in the PSAC, and their win tightens their grip on the top spot in the East Division. Despite the loss, Gannon still has a firm hold on the West Division lead as the PSAC Volleyball Championships are just around the corner.
The Golden Bears return to the friendly confines of Keystone Arena for the final home matches of the season, first with a Friday night battle against Millersville on Nov. 8 at 7 p.m., followed by the team's Senior Day against West Chester on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 4 p.m.
